A smaller entry of Belted Galloways was on parade at the Royal Highland Show this year. Bobby Landers from the Cairsnmore herd in Newton Stewart was the man in the middle of the ring who had the hard task of judging the quality animals brought before him.

The first class was for junior heifers born on or after 1st April 2025 and had 3 entries. Heading this class was Castleton Clementine from the Biggart family, she is sired by Grassknop Idris who himself was being shown at the show, taking the blue ticket for second place was Croft Gee Whizz from Katie Keiley & daughters and third place went to Brodale Dreama Eilidh from Lynsey Brown.

The next heifer class was for females born between 24th June 2024 and 31st March 2025, A larger class with 6 entries forward and collecting the first prize rosette here was Castleton Farms with Castleton Bacardi, another Grassknop Idris sired heifer. Runner up in this class was the heifer Crawlaw Rona from Allan and Susan Campbell. Taking third place was Croft Fizz from Katie Keiley & Daughters. Following this class, the award for the Best Junior Female was awarded to the winner of the second-class Castleton Bicardi from Castleton Farms with Crawlaw Rona from the Campbells taking Reserve Junior Female.

The senior heifer class for females born between 1st September 2023 and 23rd June 2024 was next with 4 entries, and the red ticket here went to Allan and Susan Campbell with the heifer Croasdale Upon A Star, a Cairnsmore Prince Charming daughter. Second prize went Castleton Farms with Castleton Bramble and Third place went to the Keileys with Croft Florence.

The cow class, for females born before 31st August 2023 followed. Four entries were put forward and taking first place was Croft Easter Bonnet from Mervyn Forster. This three-year-old cow is sired by Saltway Zeebadee, also picking up the Kinrea Trophy for the best cow. Taking the blue ticket was Copelaw Maeva from Judith Cowie and following in third was Huntfield Yolo from Joe and Zan Kirk.

On to the bulls and the junior class for bulls born on or after 23rd June 2024 featured two entries. First place went to Crawlaw Harris from Allan and Susan Campbell, a stylish son sired by Rowater Einstein. Second prize went to Castleton Farms with Castleton Branstan.

Only one bull was forward for the class of bulls born on or before 23rd June 2024 and taking that first prize ticket was Grassknop Idris from Castleton Farms, a Cairnsmore Fergus son.

Taking the Male Championship was the Campbell’s with Crawlaw Harris and in Reserve was Grassknop Idris from Castleton Farms

This left only the Supreme Championship to decide, and Bobby Landers took no hesitation in awarding the Championship award to the bull Crawlaw Harris with Castleton Bacardi in Reserve.

The following day Crawlaw Harris and Castleton Bacardi teamed up and represented the breed in the Interbreed Pairs. This was continental and native breeds all against each other and the Beltie team shone and scooped the award of Interbreed Pairs Champion. This is the first time that the Belted Galloways have won this award.

Onto the Native Interbreed Teams and Croasdale Upon a Star also from A&S Campbell joined Harris and Bacardi to clinch the Reserve Champion Team!

And finally on Friday in the Junior Beef Interbreed class, again showing against both Natives and Continentals, Crawlaw Harris was tapped out forward into the shortlist of 6 animals.

On Saturday it was the turn of Copelaw Maeva from Judith Cowie, Copelaw to join Grassknop Idris, Castleton Bacardi and Bramble all from Castleton to team up for the Interbreed Group of 4. Unfortunately, no prizes but they were out and looking fantastic – a super advert for our breed.

Finally on Saturday, Crawlaw Harris returned to the ring for the Individual Beef Interbreed competing again against both Continental and Native Champions. Unfortunately, no prizes again but this didn’t dampen what has been a fantastic few days for our breed!

Well done to both Crawlaw and Castleton and all of our exhibitors for putting on a fantastic show of cattle!
