Belties Breed Better Beef

Belted Galloways are perfectly suited to turning rough hill pasture into the finest quality meat. To ensure winter warmth, the Beltie has a double coat of hair rather than the layer of backfat most other breeds require. Their meat is therefore lean and succulent.

Where to buy Beltie beef?

Despite being widely recognised as one of the best tasting and healthier meats, Belted Galloway beef can sometimes be hard to source, particularly for those living in less rural areas. Larger commercial herds generally find it more convenient to sell their finished cattle through local markets and although these carcases will often end up in some of our better pubs, restaurants and hotels, they are not always marketed as Belted Galloway beef.

However, there is a growing awareness within the general public of the benefits of extensively and sustainably produced beef, and the specific benefits of a grass fed Belted Galloway animal producing slowly matured marbled meat high in Omega 3.  In response to this growing demand many Beltie breeders are working hard to market their meat as a premium product either through their own farm shops, in partnership with a local butcher or through box schemes.

To find a source of Belted Galloway beef near you please see the following outlets:

  1. Belted Galloway breeders with On-farm Butchery or Specialist Butchers
  2. Belted Galloway breeders running Box Schemes (subject to availability)

(this is not an exhaustive list and any registered Belted Galloway breeders who would like to be included are requested to email their details to [email protected])
