‘Females in demand and topped twice at 5400gns’
A good entry of cattle was forward at the Belted Galloway Annual show and sale at Ballymena Market. Bids were coming in thick and fast from buyers around the ringside. Trade was on fire with 3 lots making 4,000gns or above.
A great atmosphere and buzz were around the sale ring right from the start of the sale with the White Galloways and the first lot from them in the ring making 3600gns.
Top price of the day was 5400gns and this was achieved twice, first was for the pre-sale Champion Broomhill Golden Heather, a very smart 2-year-old heifer from the Edgar family. Heather is sired by Southfield Sonny Boy and out of Broomhill Bessie and sold in-calf to Whitepool MCoy. The successful bidder on the day was Brian Moorhead for his Briglands Herd. Also, at the top price of 5400gns was the Reserve Champion Tardee Sarah from Harry Irvine, she is sired by Ballylough Boris and out of Clifton Bluebell, she was also knocked down to Brian Moorhead.
Harry Irvine’s stablemate made the next best price of 4000gns and this was for Tardree Susie a heifer sired by Ballylough Boris and out of Belston Bailey. She joins the Glensbrae herd of Laurence and Colm O’Neill. 2800gns was achieved for the cow and calf unit from Brian McDowell, the eight-year-old Cow Glensbrae Snowdrop sold with her heifer calf who was sired by Ballylough Bel Boy. Snowdrop herself was sired by Gruige Glen and out of Fegarron Torri she sold to Mr Dowds from Ballymena.
The males topped at 2700gns for Ballylough Brian a 17-month-old bull from Richard Creith. He is a son of Clifton Julius and out of Ballylough Brunetta 5th. He was knocked down to Messrs McGee from Larne, Co Antrim.
There were 3 White Galloways entered and they had a good trade and topped at 3600gns for Gruige Primrose who was entered by Brian Moorhead, she is sired by Troloss Nutter and out of Melkridge Bee. Primrose was sold in-calf to Briglands Dynamite and was knocked down to Brian Stirling for his Woodbine Herd. Next best price was for her sister Gruige Querida from Dessy Henry who sold for 2800gns, she was sired by Tolosse Hunor and sold free of the bull to Harry Irvine for his Tardree Herd. The White Galloway Bull Briglands Dynamite from Brian Morrhead sold for 2500gns and was bought by Mr Crawford from Co Antrim.
