‘Breed Record Matched and Female Record broken’
A large entry of quality cattle was forward at the Belted Galloway Annual show and sale at Castle Douglas. Bids were coming in thick and fast with buyers in attendance from all over the UK. Trade was on fire with 6 lots making 10,000gns or above. Averages were good across the board, which altogether bodes well for the future of the Breed.
A great atmosphere and buzz was around the sale ring right from the start of the sale with the first lot in the ring making 2000gns. The breed record was broken last year and that 20,000gns record was matched this year. This was achieved for Racy Ghyll Jay Z, a very smart 2-year-old bull from James & Helen Rebanks, Penrith, Cumbria. Jay Z won his class in the pre-sale show and earlier in the year he was placed 3rd at the Royal Highland Show. He is sired by Mochrum Colonel and out of Lomond Dinky. The successful bidder on the day was AS & CJ Hodgson from Penrith, buying for their Glencoyne Herd. Second highest price was for another bull, this time from Carolyn Fletcher for her 2-year-old bull Barwise Jamboree, who was fourth in his class and sold for 15,000gns. He is sired by Maybeck Dundee and out of the homebred cow Barwise Jamilla and was knocked down to Duncan Maxwell, Drymen, for his Lomond Herd. 11,000gns was bid twice and, in the males, it was for Reserve Champion Male Grassknop Jobert from Alison Taylor, Penrith. He was knocked down to John and Jenny Rix from Essex for their Wissington Herd. Jobert is sired by Cairnsmore Liniker and out of Park Eve. The next best price was 10,000gns and this was achieved twice. The first one was Coulmoy Sidney from Anthony and Fiona Laing, sired by Shelsleys Bruce and out of Coulmony Dee. He sold in a two-way split to the Speddoch and Larghill Herds of Speddoch Farm Partnership and Ian Marshall. Next at 10,000gns was the Male Champion Grassknop Kenzo from Alison Taylor. This Coulmony Maximus son sold to Chris and Christine Ryder from Yorkshire for their Scaifehall Herd. The next best price was 7000gns for Castleton Angus from Messrs Biggart, Dollar. He is a Clifton Hercules son and sold to William Mack from Norfolk for his Yare Valley Herd.
In the females the breed record was broken at 11,000gns and this was achieved for an in-calf cow, Coulmony Margaux, from Katie Keiley and daughters. This smart cow was sold in-calf to Tobergill Yuist. Margaux is sired by Shelsleys Bruce and out of Coulmony May. She was purchased by Mervyn Forster from the West Midlands for his Elgany Herd. The female champion achieved the next best price in the females which was 7,000gns for the heifer Dornells Kate from James Jack, Castle Douglas. Kate is sired by Lipwood Machermore and out of Glen Garnett. She sold to Allan and Susan Campbell, Argyll, for their Crawlaw Herd. Next best price in the females was for Huntfield Zetta a heifer who sold for 4600gns to Jane Landers, Newton Stewart, for her Cairnsmore Herd.
There were six White Galloways entered this year and they topped at 1900gns for the Champion, a heifer from Doug and Tracy Ross, Romesbeoch Dolly. She is sired by Strathurr Yogi and out of Peepings Eve and sold to Gibbonhill Farmers from Dumfries. The next best price was 1700gns for Peepings Eyebright from A & I Rea, who sold in-calf to Dunsby Brian, and she goes to the home of MH & JR Weir at Falbae, Creetown.
Thank you to all the sellers, buyers and under bidders for supporting the sale and making it the success that it was.
