Female Record broken
‘Bombay’ turns up the heat to 18,000gns
A large entry of quality cattle was forward at the Belted Galloway Annual Show and Sale at Castle Douglas. Bids were coming in thick and fast, with buyers in attendance from all over the UK. Trade was on fire with 5 lots making 10,000gns or above. Averages were good across the board, which altogether bodes well for the future of the Breed.
What a buzz around the sale ring right from the word go with the first lot making 4600gns. Top price of the day was 18,000gns and this went to Castleton Farms with Castleton Bombay, an 18 month old bull sired by the 14,000gns Grassknop Idris and out of Thornthwaite Malinda. Bombay was Male Champion in the pre-sale show and earlier in the year he was Reserve Junior Male Champion at the Royal Highland Show. The successful bidder on the day was Bill, Jane and Bobby Landers from Newton Stewart, buying for their Cairnsmore Herd. Second highest price of the day was 16,000gns, which was achieved twice. In the males it was for an 18 month old bull, Racy Ghyll Hemingway, who was second in his class. He is sired by Mochrum Colonel and out of Lomond Dinky. He was knocked down to Glen Farm, Gatehouse of Fleet, for their Glen Herd. The next best price in the males was 10,000gns and this was for Racy Ghyll Odysseus, also from James Rebanks, sired by Romesbeoch Raymond and out of Mochrum Laburnum 14th. He sold to Messrs Richardson for their Stonehouse herd in Cumbria. Next at 7,500gns was Dornells Kippford 2nd from James Jack. This Lipwood Machermore son sold out of the ring in a two-way split to the Speddoch and Larghill herds. The next best price was 7,000gns for Castleton Boss from Messrs Biggart, Dollar. He is a Grassknop Idris son and sold to James Jack from Castle Douglas for his Dornells Herd.
In the females, Dornells Lucky lived up to her Lucky name and not only was the Female Champion in the pre-sale show, but she also smashed the female breed record at 16,000gns. This smart heifer was sired by the homebred bull Dornells Duke and out of Glen Connie. She was purchased by James Rebanks for his Racy Ghyll herd in Penrith. The next best price in the females, which was 14,000gns, was for the in-calf heifer Croft Easter Bonnet from Katie Keiley and daughters, Dalbeattie. Easter Bonnet is sired by Saltway Zebedee and out of Croft Jubilation. She sold in-calf to Tobergill Yuist and joins the Elgany Herd of Mervyn Forster, West Midlands. Next best price in the females was for Cairnsmore Ur Tilly Madelyn, a heifer from Bill, Jane and Bobby Landers, who sold for 6,000gns to Allan and Susan Campbell for their Crawlaw Herd.
